Dragon Boat race
Traditions At the center of this festival are the dragon boat races. Competing teams drive their colorful dragon boats forward to the rhythm of beating drums. These exciting races were inspired by the villager's valiant attempts to rescue Chu Yuan from the Mi Lo river. This tradition has remained unbroken for centuries.
Tzung Tzu
A very popular dish during the Dragon Boat festival is tzung tzu. This tasty dish consists of rice dumplings with meat, peanut, egg yolk, or other fillings wrapped in bamboo leaves. The tradition of tzung tzu is meant to remind us of the village fishermen scattering rice across the water of the Mi Low river in order to appease the river dragons so that they would not devour Chu Yuan.

1、What is the Dragon Boat Festival?
Hey, so the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that happens on the 5th day of the 5th month in the lunar calendar. It’s all about honoring Qu Yuan, a famous poet and minister from ancient China. People celebrate by eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), racing dragon boats, and hanging up herbs to ward off evil spirits. Pretty cool, right?
2、Why do people eat zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival?
Okay, so here’s the story: Qu Yuan, the poet I mentioned earlier, drowned himself in a river to protest against corruption. The locals loved him so much that they threw rice into the river to feed the fish and keep them from eating his body. Over time, this turned into wrapping rice in bamboo leaves, which is how we got zongzi! Now, it’s a must-eat during the festival.
3、What’s the deal with dragon boat racing?
Dragon boat racing is super exciting! It’s said that when Qu Yuan drowned, people raced out in their boats to try and save him. Today, teams paddle in long, colorful boats decorated like dragons, and it’s all about teamwork and speed. It’s not just a sport—it’s a way to remember Qu Yuan and celebrate Chinese culture.
4、Are there any other traditions during the Dragon Boat Festival?
Oh, for sure! Besides eating zongzi and racing dragon boats, people also hang up pouches of herbs like mugwort and calamus to keep away bad luck and diseases. Some folks even wear special perfumed sachets or tie colorful threads around their wrists for good luck. It’s a festival full of fun and meaning!
